Let’s get to know the artist:

Steve Bensing

1. Where are you from?

Valparaiso, Indiana

2.   How did you begin your art journey?

I first became interested in photography at the age of 5. My father and grandfather were both influences in my journey. Over the years I took classes and joined with others to learn. I have exhibited my work in a variety of places, including publications and galleries.

3. What inspires you?

I am a visual person. What I see inspires me. I am always seeking to see something in a new way. The works of others give me ideas and inspiration.

4. Does your piece always end up looking like the idea that inspired you?

Sometimes my work looks like I had envisioned it. Other times, I am surprised at what it can become.

5. Do you have a favorite music/artist/genre while working on a piece?

I am inspired by photography greats like Ansel Adams. But sometimes interacting with artist friends gives me encouragement.

6. Most artists are creative in many ways, what is your favorite?

My creativity involves learning to better us the tools I have available to me. It may the perspective I get when using a certain lens, or experimenting with different ways to edit my photos.

7. Do you have a favorite piece of your work and why?

My favorite piece of work is called "Shark Jaw Ice Cave". It was created with a combination of persistence with creativity. I spent hours in 8 degree weather on the ice at the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore on Lake Superior exploring the ice caves and ice formations. In this particular piece, I used a fisheye lens to get the perspective I was looking for. The people in the image give it a sense of scale. To me, this piece is an example of the "Wow Factor" that catches the attention of the viewer as well as myself.

8. Does your art help with other areas of your life?

I use my skills in my photography to help others learn. I am President of the Duneland Photography Club and seek to encourage and inspire fellow photographers to grow in their art. I use my talents to capture family events and other memories.

9. How do you define success as an artist?

An artist is a person who communicates a view of some part of life that he or she has in his or her head. The way of communication used is the medium that is effective, not only for the artist, but for those who experience the art using their senses.
