Rod Forslund
1. Where are you from?
I was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa
2. How did you begin your art journey?
I began drawing every day at a young age. When I was 7 I had Perthes disease and had to be in a wheelchair for a year. During that time art got my through that very tough time and helped me to heal. After I recovered I kept my love of art and it continues to this day.
3. What inspires you?
Life inspires me. Everyday encounters with people inspire me, a walk downtown inspires me, hiking in the dunes by Lake Michigan inspires me. Inspiration is literally all around!
4. Does your piece always end up looking like the idea that inspired you?
No, each painting takes its own journey. You start a painting thinking one way and it ends up taking its own path. You just have to start it and then let the process unfold.
5. Do you have a favorite music/artist/genre while working on a piece?
I like many different musical genre's while painting. The type of music I put on while I paint varies from Jazz to Rock and everything in between usually driven by my mood at the time.
6. Most artists are creative in many ways, what is your favorite?
My favorite art mediums are oil and acrylic painting. I paint mostly figuratively but with a touch of abstraction as well.
7. Do you have a favorite piece of your work and why?
No, not one painting in particular. My favorite genre would probably be painting landscapes/ architectural themes. I have a special love of buildings and architecture and work as a Commercial Interior Designer in my professional life at an architecture firm.
8. Does your art help with other areas of your life?
Art absolutely helps in all areas of my life. It is a source of comfort and healing to me.
9. How do you define success as an artist?
I believe that when a piece of art touches another person in an emotional way, that is success to me.
