Let’s get to know the artist:

Cortney McDonald

1. Where are you from?

Valparaiso, IN

2.   How did you begin your art journey?

I started painting when I was very young after being inspired by a children’s book about Monet. I painted throughout my whole childhood. I was accepted into the BFA Painting program at Indiana University and I graduated at Valparaiso University with my final painting thesis under the mentorship of Bob Sirko and Sarah Jantzi.

3. What inspires you?

I am incredibly inspired by the area we live in. I find the Dunes to be such a magical place, and they have been my muse as of late. I have always loved painting because it makes way for a space to reveal oneself; it is a way to show the world the beauty and pain of the human condition.

4. Does your piece always end up looking like the idea that inspired you?

My pieces evolve and change depending on what I am feeling. I always paint with my gut and each brushstroke tends to be more of an instinctual action.

5. Do you have a favorite music/artist/genre while working on a piece?

I feel as if I can derive inspiration from so many sources, and music is a big piece of that. Whether it’s some Van Morrison or Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys, I  find myself listening to music that matches how the painting I am working on makes me feel. But my inspiration is not limited to music, even a good Eric Kim recipe prior to painting ends up informing my work in its own way. I definitely believe that seeing masterpieces in different facets of one’s life helps with creating very competent work.

6. Most artists are creative in many ways, what is your favorite?

Oil painting is definitely my favorite way to create art. I love everything about oil paint. I love how it can change drastically with a different medium recipe. I love that it can be informative in a two dimensional space in one work, while being sculptural in another. I love the time and care that goes into oil painting. It allows me to slow down and be thoughtful about what I am creating.

7. Do you have a favorite piece of your work and why?

I think trying to choose a favorite piece is similar to choosing a favorite child; I definitely could not choose a favorite. They all mean something different to me.

8. Does your art help with other areas of your life?

Painting allows me to have a private space to do whatever I need to do on a mental level. Some days that means to relax and decompress, whereas other days it might mean expressing joy. Painting allows me to have time to process how I am feeling.

9. How do you define success as an artist?

I think that success as an artist means that you were able to move someone or evoke emotion in someone. My goal is to make work that makes the viewers truly feel something. If I am able to do that, I consider myself a successful artist.
