Let’s get to know the artist:
Alicia Martin
1. Where are you from?
Chesterton, IN
2. How did you begin your art journey?
I’ve always loved exploring photography, but it wasn’t until I experienced a traumatic brain injury (TBI) in 2022 that my passion for it became a significant part of my everyday life. As part of my healing journey, I began taking short walks, which gradually grew into longer hikes. During these walks, I found myself drawn to the natural beauty around me, and I started using my phone (and then camera) to capture the world through my eyes. Photography became a way for me to reconnect with both nature and myself, transforming the healing process into an artistic exploration of resilience and wonder.
3. What inspires you?
I’m inspired by the quiet, unassuming beauty of nature that reveals itself when you truly take the time to observe. The changing seasons, the transformative effect of rain or snow on a subject, the interplay of shadows and light, and the intricate textures of the natural world captivate me. I’m especially drawn to the subtle elements of nature that may not immediately stand out as colorful or striking but hold a profound, understated beauty. To me, there is something extraordinary in everything—if you pause, look closely, and allow yourself to connect with it.
4. Does your piece always end up looking like the idea that inspired you?
Sometimes, but not always. My goal is to capture the essence of my subject as it exists in the moment. During the editing process, I strive to stay true to the original scene by preserving the colors and lighting as closely as possible. At the same time, I use subtle adjustments to emphasize the elements I find most compelling, guiding the viewer to see and feel what captured my attention in the first place.
5. Do you have a favorite music/artist/genre while working on a piece?
When I’m in nature, I prefer to immerse myself fully in the environment, keeping my senses open and free of distractions like music. It helps me stay present and attuned to the details I want to capture. During the editing process, however, I often listen to indie and folk music. These genres provide a calm, reflective backdrop that complements the meditative nature of my work.
6. Most artists are creative in many ways, what is your favorite?
I express myself in many ways- through writing, drawing, crafting, and photography. Each medium offers a unique way to explore and share my perspective. I’m always excited to learn new forms of creative expression, as I believe creativity has endless possibilities for growth and connection.
7. Do you have a favorite piece of your work and why?
My favorite pieces are always changing, often influenced by the seasons. As the environment shifts, so does my perspective, and I find myself drawn to different subjects or moods in my work. Each season brings new opportunities to capture something unique, which keeps my favorites evolving with time.
8. Does your art help with other areas of your life?
Absolutely! Art has been an essential part of my healing journey, providing me with a powerful outlet for creative expression. It helps me process emotions, find calm in the present moment, and connect more deeply with the world around me. Through photography and other creative pursuits, I’ve discovered a sense of purpose and mindfulness that enriches many areas of my life.
9. How do you define success as an artist?
I define success as someone’s willingness to explore their creative interests and passions with an open mind and heart. It’s about the courage to try new things, embrace failure as a part of the process, and keep pushing forward. For me, success isn’t measured by the outcome, but by the willingness to grow, experiment, and stay true to one’s creative journey.
10. How can people who are interested in your work contact you?
